Dear Seattle,
As we bid adieu to 2008 and welcome 2009, we hope that Seattle Publishing's monthly journal will bring you helpful insights throughout the coming year.
Cheers,
The SP Crew
Joint Venture
On Jan. 5, 2009, Seattle Publishing (SP) announced a joint venture between SP's BicyclePaper and Salt Lake City's Cycling Utah for the publishing of 2009's Rocky Mountain Tour and Racing Guides. The annual guides offer event calendars, rider insights and helpful articles about all things cycling for the upcoming season. By March 2009 the guides will be available at local bike shops, state tourism bureaus, regional cycling events and online at www.bicyclepaper.com.
"By leveraging BicyclePaper's first year of success with a well-respected regional cycling publication based in Utah, it is exciting to think of the possibilities of offering our advertisers the opportunity to expand their reach beyond traditional markets, " stated Jay Stilwell, Seattle Publishing's president.

The Printing Pyramid
As our clients look to reduce publishing costs by implementing new content strategies, we are often asked for ideas on how to streamline and reduce publishing costs.
Here is a graphic that helps to put things into perspective. By focusing on the process and streamlining for efficiency, real savings can be gained.
By utilizing service vendors, implementing new technologies and streamlining publication work flows, process costs can be reduced by 20-30 percent.
Annual Catalog
GENSCO, the Northwest's largest HVAC wholesale distributor, worked with SP to develop a new look and layout for their 2009 Parts & Accessories catalog. As part of this process, SP retooled GENSCO's Gutenberg catalog page templates for automated page flows based on the new design.
By working with GENSCO's in-house marketing team, SP's production crew was able to provide layout and publishing support for the catalog. This support helped GENSCO focus on other core marketing activities while we continued to support their goal of a catalog on an annual basis.
CrowdSourcing according to SP
According to Wikipedia, CrowdSourcing is a term that has become popular with business authors and journalists as shorthand for the trend of leveraging the mass collaboration enabled by Web 2.0 technologies to achieve business goals.
SP's Gutenberg Publishing System® is our version for this popular term. With the power of Gutenberg's database, managers, editors, and designers discover how multiple departments and vendors can work together through collaboration for the development of content for a variety of publications and websites.
"Fun Time!"
Our crew believes that FUN is something that happens often, especially at work. So we get creative by having time set aside for activities that help to foster goodwill and creativity. Examples of FUN TIME! include; skiing, hiking, ice skating, food tastings, pumpkin carving and walks to Pike Place Market.
Each month the crew decides what they would like to do for FUN and then we all agree on the day that it will work with our busy schedules. On that day, each person is responsible for a part of the selected activity. This way everyone shares in the experience. From time to time we have had clients and vendors join us in these activities. Even our UPS driver, Tony, has become a participant in the food tastings and was the winner of the pumpkin tasting event with his wife's pumpkin roll.
Darren Dencklau joined Seattle Publishing in Dec. 2008 as our assistant editor. He will be working with BicyclePaper on the web and print editions of the publication. A diehard bicycle commuter, Darren commuted from his home in Ballard during the heavy snowfalls of 2008. Please welcome Darren to our crew.
Sincerely,
Seattle Publishing, Inc
