What Is Gutenberg?
We set the bar pretty high by naming our publishing system after the inventor, who revolutionized modern communications. At Seattle Publishing, we believe that using databases to manage and produce content is changing the way you will publish to print or the web. Based on this philosophy, we chose to use the name Gutenberg, in honor of this extraordinary inventor.
The Gutenberg Publishing System® works with Adobe InDesign, QuarkXpress, Dreamweaver and other industry standard applications, to flow formatted content to catalogs, directories, guides and websites. With its easy-to-use interface, Gutenberg puts at your fingertips images and data in a variety of reports, page views, and formats for editing and proofing.
With the ability to communicate with SQL, Oracle, and UNIX databases, Gutenberg bridges the gap with your company's legacy data to create a content management platform that anyone can use. This cross-platform application centralizes content, which allows users to expand their capabilities, while reducing production time and maintenance costs.
Beginnings
Developed in 1995, the Gutenberg Publishing System® was first used to link a database to Adobe Pagemaker for a monthly cycling publication. Since then, Gutenberg evolved to include capabilities such as flowing images and photos inline, mulitple page previews, and content flow to www.bicyclepaper.com.
Today
With Gutenberg, you can go beyond just publishing catalogs, flyers, and websites. We evolved the core technology to work with SQL and FileMaker v.9. So now from your desk-top you can manage anywhere from a few hundred items to hundreds of thousands. By utilizing Gutenberg, you will maintain real-time content flow that is communicated to your clients.

Companion Modules and Services
Catalogs and Mini-logs
The Gutenberg Publishing System® eliminates the time consuming way of building a catalog. Content and images are directly flowed into QuarkXpress, or Adobe InDesign, without the time-consuming process of formatting content. Gutenberg’s customized page views allow styles and formats to be viewed directly in the database and then formats are automatically flowed to your publication. This allows for reduced production time, leaving more time for design. When you are ready to produce a catalog, you decide which content and images to flow and in what order which makes it possible to create small specialty catalog or mini-logs. Since all content updates are completed in the database, you can make last minute modifications without delaying the production process.
Monthly Sales Flyers
To fill in the information gap between catalogs, many businesses create flyers to let their clients know what's new on a monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly basis. Similar to producing a catalog, flyer production is often costly and time-consuming. Built upon the Gutenberg Publishing System® for catalogs, the flyer module produces flyers in days instead of weeks.
Websites and Micro-sites
Data searches and product availability, online ordering and maps and directions are just a part of the functionality of this module. Gutenberg’s Internet module allows companies to extend their content capabilities to their customers without significant cost. The Gutenberg Publishing System® flows content into industry standard Web applications, such as Dreamweaver and Golive. And with our direct web connection, updates can be done via your desk-top without having to purchase additional software. By centralizing your content into Gutenberg, content maintenance costs are reduced and flexibility is increased because the same content can be sent to multiple websites or Micro-sites.
Directories and Guides
Gutenberg’s Directory module allows publishers to achieve the same benefits as catalogers with a system that has been designed for the unique requirements of producing a directory. This module lets you track and maintain your content in a database with the ability to flow it into multiple publications. With Gutenberg's custom sort orders, directory listings can be easily organized in multiple ways.
With Gutenberg’s Guide module, you have the ability to flow maps, images, and editorial into desk-top publishing applications. Introductions, Table of Contents, Guide pages, and Indexes are all automated to create finished pages. With this module, you will have a completed publication in weeks not months.

Whether you have a single online database or multiple database driven websites, our hosting services provide you with reliability and security that you can expect from Seattle Publishing. Our on and offsite servers incorporate the latest technology that provides a safe internet-serving environment.
